Municipal Solid Waste Management in Indian Context Solid waste management refers to the collecting, treating, and disposing of solid material that is discarded or is no longer useful. Solid waste management is an important aspect of urban area management. Improper disposal of municipal solid waste can create unsanitary conditions, which can lead to environmental pollution and the outbreak of vector-borne disease. Generation of Solid Waste Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Generation in Indian cities ranges between 200 - 870 grams/day, depending upon the region's lifestyle and the size of the city. The per capita waste generation is increasing by about 1.3% per year in India. With rapid urbanisation, the country is facing massive waste management challenge. Over 377 million urban people live in 7,935 towns and cities and generate 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste per annum.
