A Founding Letter ยท Bengaluru

We built the desk we
always wished existed.

the founding team

When we started reporting on Indian startups, the facts that mattered most were the hardest to find. A funding round lived in one press release, the cap table in another, the real story nowhere at all. We spent more time reconciling numbers than writing.

So we made a decision that still shapes everything: the story and the record should live in the same place. A newsroom that reports with rigour, sitting on top of a database anyone can verify. Not a wire service. Not a leaderboard for sale. A standing record.

"Information about who is building India's economy should be structured, verifiable, and free to discover."

Today that record covers companies in every sector and city we can reach. We verify before we publish. We hold a fact when sources disagree rather than guess. And we keep the basics free, because the right to know who is building, and on whose money, shouldn't sit behind a paywall.

We take no money from the companies we cover in exchange for coverage. The newsroom is meant to be paid for by reader subscriptions and by brand partnerships that are labelled as such on the page, and those two are kept apart. Today neither is charging: the product is in free beta. It's slower. It's also the only way we know to keep the edit honest. If that resonates, the rest of this letter is an invitation.

What we believe

Four convictions, in plain words.
01

Verify, then publish

Every figure is sourced. When sources conflict, we hold the fact rather than guess. Weโ€™d rather be late than wrong.

02

Discovery should be free

Single-company facts are public and googleable. We earn on depth and analysis, never on the basic right to know.

03

Independent by design

Reader-funded, not founder-funded. No company buys a profile, a ranking, or a kinder edit.

04

The record outlives the news

A headline ages in a day; a well-kept company record compounds for years. We optimise for the second.

What we cover

Deep dives and sector playbooks for operators and allocators.

These are the roles that own the record, not bylines. We have not named individuals yet.
