Global waste generation due to extensive plastic use is expected to be around 2.2 billion tons annually by 2025. Inefficient recycling of non-biodegradable wastes has resulted into deadly pollution of landfills, fertile soil and various water bodies. We at EcoWeb Lab Pvt. Ltd (INC:U37100AS2021PTC022079) under the mentorship of NEATE HUB Assam Agriculture University, JORHAT, ASSAM, is researching to harness the natural binding capacity of mycelium with agricultural waste as suitable substrate to produce an alternative to plastic packaging. Agricultural waste such as rice straw, sawdust, wheat bran, rice and oats husk, etc. serves as an excellent source of substrate binding. Mycelium produces miles of threads like root incredibly fast by utilizing carbohydrates present in the waste and can grow to fit any mould, almost like dense foam. The mixture emerges gets glued together into a hard substance that is water- resistant, fireproof, and light in weight. These unique characteristics can be an excellent substitute for polystyrene and Styrofoam packaging industries.
