Introduction Traditional sugarcane production system involves various inputs contributing towards cost of production, out of various inputs, the seed contribute to around 10 per cent of the total inputs in the form of setts (sugarcane cuttings of two/three eyes) which comes in tune of around 6-8 tons per hectare. The bulky seed cane creates a lot of logistical challenges in handling, transportation and storage. Among the alternate methods, the true to type propagation of planting material based on tissue culture technique is suggested, but, owing to its high cost and cumbersome production technology, it has its own limitations of high costing which proves it to beyond the purchase by the farmers, hence become uneconomical. A viable alternative is single bud culture technology which reduces the mass and enables quick multiplication of true to type saplings of certified variety seeds. In this method, the buds are scooped or taken out as a single bud from the selected seed cane by bud chipper or cutter, the single buds are treated with an appropriate pesticide and placed in pro-trays filled with grow media.
