Patient compliance (also adherence, capacitance) describes the degree to which a patient correctly follows medical advice. Most commonly, it refers to medication or drug compliance. Nearly 50% of patients do not take their medications as prescribed. Patient adherence is particularly important in case of chronic non-communicable diseases especially Hypertension and Diabetes which lead to disastrous complications if unchecked. Adherence to therapy also plays a major role in communicable diseases such as Tuberculosis where antibiotic resistance and relapse is commonly seen. Previous approaches to improving patient adherence to medical therapy include Software-only offerings (cheap and marginally effective) like smart-phone apps or Hardware-centric offerings, like smart pill bottles and caps, which are more expensive.
