Flipkart is set to enter India’s online food delivery market with a limited pilot launch in the coming weeks. The Walmart-owned e-commerce company will initially introduce the service to a small group of users before deciding on a nationwide rollout. The move marks Flipkart’s latest effort to expand beyond e-commerce and quick commerce into one of India’s fastest-growing digital services.
Pilot Launch Before National Expansion
According to Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy, the company will first test its food delivery platform with a limited audience. Customer feedback, operational performance, and overall user experience during the pilot will determine how the service is improved before expanding to more cities across India.
Taking On Zomato And Swiggy
Flipkart’s entry will directly challenge market leaders Zomato and Swiggy, which currently dominate India’s food delivery industry. The company believes that a strong customer value proposition, reliable service, and competitive pricing can help it build a place in the highly competitive market despite entering later than its rivals.
How The Service Will Work
The food delivery platform is expected to be available through both a dedicated app and the main Flipkart app. Reports also suggest the company may use the government’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) to strengthen restaurant partnerships and improve service availability during the initial rollout.
Looking Ahead
If the pilot receives positive customer feedback, Flipkart plans to gradually expand its food delivery service across the country. The move could increase competition in India’s online food delivery sector, giving consumers more choices while encouraging innovation and better services across the industry.
