Samsung Expands ‘Make in India’ Footprint with Local Laptop Production

Samsung, the South Korean electronics giant, has taken another major step in its “Make in India” journey by launching local manufacturing of laptops at its Greater Noida factory. This move not only boosts India’s ambition to become a global electronics manufacturing hub but also positions Samsung to strengthen its presence in the Indian laptop market.

A New Milestone for Samsung in India:

Having already manufactured smartphones, wearables, and tablets in India, Samsung has now added laptops to its local production portfolio. The Greater Noida facility-one of the first global electronics manufacturing plants set up in the country back in 1996-serves as the launchpad for this new initiative.

Government Support and Industry Context:

Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s recent meeting with Samsung’s top leadership, including Southwest Asia President JB Park and Corporate Vice President SP Chun, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to India. “Samsung continues to expand manufacturing of its advanced technology devices in Bharat, driven by talent and innovation,” Vaishnaw commented, emphasizing the government’s continued partnership with the tech major.

Why Local Laptop Manufacturing Matters:

  • Strengthens the Local Supply Chain: Producing laptops domestically will help Samsung better serve Indian consumers and respond more rapidly to market shifts.
  • Boosts ‘Make in India’ and Exports: Samsung is already the nation’s second-largest exporter of mobile handsets, after Apple. Adding laptops to its ‘Made in India’ lineup furthers the government’s vision of making India a key global manufacturing destination.
  • Competitive Edge: Local manufacturing could help Samsung offer more competitive prices, especially in a market where players like HP, Dell, and Lenovo lead. It also aligns with India’s evolving import policies to encourage more domestic production.

Market Position and Future Plans:

Globally, Samsung operates its second-largest mobile phone manufacturing unit in India. While it commands a leading position in smartphones and holds a 15% share of the Indian tablet market, Samsung is still new to the country’s laptop segment. The move to manufacture laptops locally could help Samsung grow its market share and compete more aggressively with established brands.

Conclusion:

By kickstarting laptop manufacturing in India, Samsung is signaling a robust vote of confidence in India’s talent and infrastructure. This expansion supports the broader ‘Make in India’ vision and marks a significant milestone in Samsung’s ongoing partnership with the country for advanced technology production. As local production ramps up, consumers can look forward to greater product diversity and potential price advantages in the near future.
