Megaliter Varunaa Raises ₹15 Crore Seed Round to Drive Urban Water Circularity

Hyderabad-based startup Megaliter Varunaa has secured ₹15 crore in a seed-funding round, marking a pivotal step in scaling its mission to turn sewage treatment plants into productive water utilities. The capital will accelerate project development, technology innovation and expansion across Indian metros.

The Funding Round & Investor Backing

Megaliter Varunaa, a subsidiary of the listed Banka BioLoo Limited and part of the mentorship ecosystem of Brigade REAP, raised the amount from long-term institutional investors.
The fresh capital will fuel the company’s expansion into major metropolitan markets like Mumbai and Bengaluru.

The Business Model: From Sewage to Circular Water Utility

Megaliter Varunaa deploys its flagship “Megaliter Model”, a zero-CapEx, subscription-based solution that takes under-utilised sewage treatment plants (STPs) and turns them into full-fledged water-recycling utilities.
The offering spans end-to-end service contracts, covering financial planning, operations, compliance and performance of the water reuse system. Instead of simply treating wastewater, the company enables its reuse for non-potable purposes such as flushing, gardening and chiller systems, thereby reducing urban dependency on fresh water resources.

Milestones & Future Targets

According to Managing Director Vishal Murarka, the company has already treated over 3 billion litres of wastewater and currently has a capacity exceeding 2.5 billion litres annually. With this seed funding, the plan is to scale up to recycling over 10 billion litres annually within the next 12 months.

Why This Matters

  1. Water stress is rising in Indian cities and wastewater reuse offers a strategic path to relief.
  2. Circular-economy logic: Converting waste into value-generating utility services rather than letting it sit idle.
  3. Zero-CapEx model makes adoption more palatable for municipal bodies and urban developers, lowering upfront investment risk.
  4. Urban growth & sustainability alignment: With cities expanding fast, solutions like this align with climate resilience and urban infrastructure modernization objectives.

What Comes Next

With the new funds, Megaliter Varunaa will:

  • Expand its footprint into key cities such as Mumbai and Bengaluru.
  • Intensify technology innovation to support monitoring, operations, compliance and performance of the water-recycling utilities.
  • Strengthen project development, partnerships with municipalities/developers, and build scale quickly in the urban water-reuse market.
