Zomato Sees Nearly 5,000 Gig Worker Exits Every Month, Says CEO Deepinder Goyal

Food delivery platform Zomato ends work for nearly 5,000 gig workers every month, according to its founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal. The company clarified that most of these exits are linked to fraud-related issues, while a significant number of delivery partners also leave voluntarily.

Fraud-Related Terminations Drive Most Exits

Goyal stated that a large share of the monthly disengagements is due to fraudulent activities detected on the platform. These include misuse of accounts, manipulation of delivery processes, and violations of company policies. Zomato said it maintains strict monitoring systems to protect customers, restaurant partners, and the overall ecosystem.

High Attrition Is Common in Gig Economy

The company highlighted that high churn is a structural reality of the gig economy. Many delivery partners join platforms temporarily and exit once they find alternative income sources or full-time employment. Zomato noted that such voluntary exits form a considerable portion of the monthly numbers.

Balancing Scale With Platform Integrity

With millions of orders being processed each day, Zomato said ensuring trust and reliability is critical. Regular audits, technology-led checks, and enforcement actions are part of its efforts to maintain service quality while operating at scale across India.

Gig Work Remains Flexible, Says Company

Zomato reiterated that gig work on its platform is designed to offer flexibility rather than long-term employment. Delivery partners are free to log in and out, work across multiple platforms, or leave at any time, making frequent exits a natural outcome of the model.

Ongoing Debate on Gig Worker Stability

The disclosure has reignited discussions around job stability, fraud detection, and worker protection in India’s fast-growing gig economy. While companies stress flexibility and platform safety, worker groups continue to call for clearer safeguards and transparency in disengagement processes.

Zomato maintains that its approach is aimed at keeping the platform fair, secure, and sustainable for all stakeholders involved.
