Abu Dhabi-based technology group G42 has announced plans to establish a powerful national-scale AI supercomputer in India with a peak computing capacity of 8 exaflops, marking a major advancement in the country’s AI infrastructure development. The project was unveiled at the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi and reflects growing international cooperation in high-performance computing.
Partnership and Technology
The 8-exaflop system will be delivered in collaboration with US AI chipmaker Cerebras, Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence and India’s Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). This partnership brings together global AI and compute expertise to build one of the most advanced supercomputing facilities in the region.
Boosting India’s AI Capabilities
An exaflop represents one quintillion calculations per second, and an 8-exaflop capacity significantly expands India’s ability to train, develop and deploy large-scale AI models. The system is expected to support advanced AI research, accelerate innovation, and enable scalable AI applications across sectors including public services, language technologies and specialized industry solutions.
Sovereign Infrastructure and Data Governance
The supercomputer will operate under India-defined governance frameworks, ensuring that data remains within national jurisdiction and complies with sovereign security requirements. This focus on data sovereignty aligns with broader efforts under the India AI Mission to build trusted and secure domestic AI infrastructure.
Access and Impact
Once operational, the system will be accessible to a wide range of users including academic institutions, startups, enterprises and government agencies. By democratising access to high-performance compute resources, the project aims to lower barriers to AI innovation and help Indian researchers and developers build AI solutions tailored to local needs.
Strategic Context
The announcement follows high-level engagements between India and the UAE, reflecting deepening cooperation in technology and innovation. The supercomputer project builds on earlier collaborations between G42 and Indian partners in AI research and development.
This development positions India among the nations investing in exaflop-scale AI infrastructure, strengthening its competitiveness in the global AI landscape.
