Tech Mahindra has announced the launch of a new Hindi-first large language model (LLM) focused on education, marking a significant milestone in India’s AI ecosystem. Developed under the company’s Project Indus initiative in collaboration with NVIDIA, this powerful AI model is designed specifically to make advanced learning more accessible for students across the country by addressing the linguistic diversity of India.
A Breakthrough for Indian Language AI
The new model represents an evolution of Project Indus, which was initially developed to build sovereign AI technologies rooted in India’s linguistic and cultural context. The education-focused LLM is built with a whopping 8 billion parameters, significantly scaled from earlier versions, and powered by NVIDIA’s AI infrastructure such as the NeMo framework and NIM microservices. These advanced technologies help deliver scalable, high-performance AI tailored to local requirements.
Designed for Learning at Scale
Unlike generic language models, this Hindi-first LLM is purpose-built to help learners understand complex subjects, including science and physics, in their own language. To overcome the challenge of limited high-quality Hindi training data, Tech Mahindra’s team generated hundreds of millions of synthetic language tokens, significantly enhancing the model’s linguistic fluency and adaptability.
Agentic AI and Interactive Capabilities
One of the standout features of the model is its agentic AI capabilities, meaning it can act autonomously to assist students, answer questions, and engage in conversational learning in natural Hindi. This opens the door to interactive educational tools that can support tutoring, explanations, and personalised learning experiences for millions of students.
Supporting India’s AI Sovereignty Vision
Tech Mahindra’s leadership emphasises that locally grounded AI models are crucial for inclusive technological progress in India. With a deep understanding of linguistic diversity and educational needs, the company aims to bridge gaps in access to quality learning, especially in regional and vernacular contexts. This initiative also strengthens India’s position in sovereign AI development, reducing dependence on foreign language models.
What This Means for the Future
The launch of a Hindi-first education LLM could reshape how students learn and engage with complex subjects, especially in areas with limited access to high-quality educational resources. By combining advanced AI with cultural and language relevance, Tech Mahindra is charting a course for more inclusive, scalable, and impactful AI-driven education solutions in India.
