Micron Technology will start commercial semiconductor production in India by the end of February, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said. Speaking on the sidelines of a global forum, Vaishnaw stated that the project has moved beyond planning and pilot stages and is now ready for full-scale commercial operations.
Sanand ATMP Facility Backed by $2.75 Billion Support
The production will take place at Micron’s advanced assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat. The plant has received total investment support of $2.75 billion, reflecting strong backing from both the company and the Indian government. Pilot runs at the facility have already been completed, clearing the way for commercial output.
A Key Step in India’s Semiconductor Push
The Sanand plant focuses on the back-end of chip manufacturing, where semiconductor wafers are converted into fully tested and packaged chips. These chips are critical for sectors such as consumer electronics, automobiles, data centres, and industrial equipment. Officials say the facility will strengthen India’s role in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Signal to Global Investors
The start of commercial production by Micron is being seen as a major confidence boost for India’s semiconductor mission. It marks a shift from announcements and construction to actual manufacturing on Indian soil. Industry experts believe this milestone will encourage more global chipmakers to invest in India and help create a strong ecosystem for high-value electronics manufacturing.
