Bengaluru is set to get a dedicated museum celebrating India’s journey in technology, innovation and entrepreneurship. Slated to open by 2027, the museum will be housed at the old NGEF factory campus in Baiyappanahalli and built through a public-private partnership between the government’s Department of Electronics, IT & BT (and Science & Technology) and the civic-innovation group UnboxingBLR.
What the Museum Will Be: A Living Archive of Innovation
- The museum will occupy 12,000 sqm in a repurposed “Switch Gear” factory shed at the NGEF campus.
- Its aim is to chronicle 4-5 decades of technological progress in India, including milestones from research labs, founding of startup companies, major innovations, and the growth of industries. Visitors will get to experience exhibits from early computing and telecom to recent advances in deep-tech, biotech, AI, and startups.
- The design will be interactive and immersive, blending physical exhibits with digital/experiential displays – a “phygital” museum that mixes history, present-day technology and future trends.
Who’s Behind It: Collaboration Between Government & Industry
- The project is being developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the state’s Department of Electronics, IT & BT (and S&T) and UnboxingBLR.
- The museum will be managed by the newly formed Karnataka Technology and Innovation Museum Foundation (KTIMF).
- A global Request for Proposal (RFP) will soon be issued for designing the museum’s exhibits, indicating that curators & design firms will be invited internationally for this project.
Why Bengaluru was Chosen – The City’s Tech Story and Role
- Bengaluru’s identity as India’s “technology capital” – with its dense ecosystem of startups, global tech firms, research centres and legacy institutions, makes it the natural home for a museum dedicated to innovation.
- The museum aims to help the public understand how technology and entrepreneurship transformed India’s economic and social landscape over decades. It hopes to serve as a source of inspiration for students, aspiring entrepreneurs, innovators and researchers.
Timeline & Budget: What to Expect in Coming Years
- The first phase of the museum is expected to open in 2027. A second phase is planned to follow later.
- The project has been allocated a preliminary budget of around ₹100 crore.
- The upcoming global RFP for the museum’s design suggests international-level quality and immersive exhibit planning, hinting that the museum aims to meet global standards, not just domestic expectations.
What to Look Forward To & Potential Impact
- The museum could become a landmark cultural and educational destination, for students, tech professionals, entrepreneurs, historians and tourists, giving them a tangible sense of India’s tech heritage and evolution.
- As a “living archive,” it may also foster future innovations: by showcasing past breakthroughs and current technologies, it could inspire new ideas, collaborations and startup ventures.
- Given the participation of government and industry, the museum may also help bridge the gap between policy, industry and public awareness, promoting science, innovation and entrepreneurship at grassroots level.
