In a significant shift toward digital self-reliance, the Ministry of Education has directed all its officials to adopt Zoho Office Suite for everyday tasks. The change reflects the government’s push to reduce dependence on foreign software and bolster Indian tech products.
Why the Switch: Promoting Home-grown Technology
The official memorandum notes that the adoption of Zoho is meant to reinforce India’s journey toward Swadeshi Digital and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
By mandating a domestic office platform, the government aims to:
- Cut reliance on foreign software
- Preserve control over data and digital infrastructure
- Encourage growth of indigenous tech firms
- Signal a transition “from a service economy to a product nation”
What the Circular Says:
The circular, digitally signed by Nishant Upadhyaya (Under Secretary, Government of India), has been circulated widely within the Ministry’s departments, including to personal secretaries of ministers.
Key directives include:
- All officials must use Zoho for creating, editing, and sharing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
- Zoho Office is now integrated with NIC mail, so users do not need separate logins or installations.
- Staff are required to acquaint themselves with Zoho’s tools and may take support from the CMIS/NIC division as needed.

Zoho Office is a cloud-based productivity suite developed by Zoho Corporation under the leadership of Sridhar Vembu.
Its prominent components include:
- Zoho Writer – for word processing
- Zoho Sheet – for spreadsheets
