Mumbai-based spacetech innovator Manastu Space has just secured $3million (approx. ₹26crore) in an extended Series A funding round led by venture capital firm Capital-A, with strong participation from established backers such as Capital 2B, Indian Angel Network (IAN), E2MC, the Bhagnani Family Office, and Jeet Chandan. This strategic infusion will power the commercial deployment of Manastu’s breakthrough green propulsion solutions, marking a key milestone in the journey toward safer, cleaner, and more efficient satellite operations.
What Sets Manastu Apart: Green Propulsion and Debris Avoidance
Founded in 2017 by IIT Bombay alumni Tushar Jadhav and Ashtesh Kumar, Manastu Space specializes in environmentally friendly propulsion systems for satellites. Their flagship technology, the VYOM 2U green propulsion system, offers a non-toxic alternative to conventional chemical-based thrusters, reducing both operational risk and environmental impact. The system was test-fired onboard PSLV C-60 by ISRO in December 2024, successfully demonstrating its ability to help satellites maneuver and avoid space debris in orbit.
Moving Towards TRL-9: Long-Term Reliability in Orbit
Currently at Technology Readiness Level 8 (TRL-8)-meaning flight-tested-the startup aims to achieve TRL-9, which reflects sustained, proven operation in actual space missions. This new funding is primarily directed to scaling and validating the green propulsion system for long-term use, ensuring satellites can safely perform collision avoidance and stay operational far longer than usual.
Expanding the Horizon: In-Orbit Servicing and Global Plans
Manastu Space isn’t stopping at propulsion. The company is developing next-generation in-orbit servicing technologies like satellite refuelling, life extension, and deorbiting dead satellites. These advances promise not only to combat the mounting threat of space debris but also to make satellite missions more economical and sustainable. Fresh capital will drive international expansion to the United States, Europe, and Asia-engaging global satellite manufacturers, constellation operators, and integrators.
Strategic Partnerships and Industry Recognition:
Already, Manastu Space collaborates with major organizations, including the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), French space startup Latitude, and Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX). These alliances enhance the company’s technical credibility and commercial reach, positioning it strongly in the global space supply chain.
Why This Matters: India’s Space Sector on the Cusp of Growth
This funding comes as India’s private space sector is booming, with market projections reaching $40billion by 2040. Amid multiple recent investments in startups like Xovian Aerospace and Omspace, Manastu’s sustainable mission and successful technology demonstrations underscore the country’s growing reputation for innovation in space mobility and orbital safety.
Conclusion: Charting the Future of Eco-Friendly Spaceflight
By championing green propulsion and in-orbit services, Manastu Space is redefining what’s possible for affordable, safe, and long-lasting space missions. Their journey from flight demos to full-scale commercial deployment is paving the way for satellites that orbit cleaner-and smarter-than ever before.
